Inventions and innovations in the plant sector are not protected by patents but through a similar procedure before the Ministry of Agriculture. Most of the Balkan states are part of UPOV and the procedure is standardized. We coordinate our clients with the local Ministries of agriculture both in Plant Breeder’s rights and Plant Variety Registration matters, including handling of annual maintenance fees for our clients’ registered Plant Breeder’s rights.
The advantage of having a plant variety entered in the Plant Variety Registry is in the possibility to commercialize the plant of interest, whereas granted plant breeder’s rights enable the producer to develop an existing or create a new variety.
